"Romantic Migraine" by Juliet Martin
Romantic Migraine by Juliet Martin

SHAKEN

unicorn hunter: perfect pregame fuel / sip dry sherry / aperol and lemon / shaken with rosemary / gain confidence / spend the evening with a tinder couple / (but really just lust after her)

black out days:1 booze that doesn’t taste like booze is the best / worst kind / wake up in parkville or riverside in nothing but a thong / served with a two in five chance of forgetting your bra there too

filthy love: pink and glitter until it’s not / a pleasure you wish you felt guilty for

SPIRIT-FREE

dry county: what hydrates more than water? / whatever it is / will it bring back feeling in your limbs / will it stay in your stomach during the august photoshoot you showed up to woefully hungover?

STIRRED

pawn shop heart: deeply bitter / (brace your palette) / finishes sweet to make up for it / masochists only / one second of sugar is all you’re ever gonna get

caught in the crossfade: quantity over quality liquor / pair with a lungful of smoke in a stranger’s apartment for best effect / no substitutions

manhattan: styled after cat power / drink until you don’t look at the moon tonight2

game changer: recipe varies / does not matter / blurs vision / pulls the top of your bra up above your low scoop neck tank / slides straps off shoulders / sloppy

home alone: served only to parties of one / exactly what you’d pour in your bedroom on a saturday / as such it’s also up to you to know your limits here

1 inspired by the Phantogram song of the same name
2 italicized is a lyric from the Cat Power song “Manhattan”

JULIET MARTIN is an interdisciplinary artist working with handmade textile and digital media. Her work incorporates handspun and hand-dyed fibers woven with illustrations printed on fabric. In 2012 she discovered weaving on a Japanese loom and the Saori school of philosophy that insists “there are no mistakes.” By embracing that free-form process, what might be considered “mistakes” in traditional weaving encourages unique experimentation. She uses the improvisational nature of this kind of weaving to escape restrictions and rules. She challenges the function of the fiber medium. Her process focuses on aesthetics instead of rules. She cuts up and puts back together her weavings, taking something precious and recontextualizing it. By adding drawings to the weavings, a door is opened. Each illustration becomes a legend to the tapestries, refining the message of each piece. Unifying the weaving and the drawing results in a unique combination of emotion and representation. julietmartin.com

Chianti
by Nancy P. Davenport

I found that bottle of chianti in the cabinet for cooking it’s nothing special— kind of cheap, actually I’ve spent the hour, the day, the week minutes ignoring that it’s in there seconds but here it is in front of me, the cork pushed in with the end of a knife because I threw away […]

What the Mind Hungers for
by Michael T. Young

There is so much reality it often escapes me. Even at dinner, while chewing root vegetables, the excess bursts from my mouth with each bite. I think it a trickle of beet juice and dab it with a napkin. Bacon sizzles and pops on the stove with abundant verity and I think how good but am […]

On the Freedom and Creativity in Messiness: A Conversation with The Cyborg Jillian Weise
by Josh Christian

Josh Christian: I wanted to start with a broader question to get us into your life and work. I think what struck me about it was that there were so many threads that are happening, and you’re introducing your reader to this whole world of disability that maybe they haven’t even begun to consider, right?
