Mood Piece
by Alice B. Fogel

July 1, 2018 Contributed By: Alice B. Fogel

The subject of the fan
is a mere suggestion, open
to interpretation.

Painted bat wing,
paper leaf,
it knows its way in the dark.

Both shield against light
and quickener of flame,
the fan’s act

of concealment perfects
flirtation, graces grief. Folded
in on itself, dipped

in clear water, then—flashed
and flaring in air—spread,
it’s a generous offering in heat,

following a stark retreat.
Map, dagger. Target
and arrow. Overlapping edges

of weapon and defense.
The subject is full revelation.

The subject is cool refusal.

The Art of Poetry: Summer of Love
by Stephen Gibson

Clo needs to believe she’ll help to end the war and, with those others she lives with in the Haight, that she’ll actually find peace and love forever.   She’s run away with a girlfriend—this is before we meet (which turns out, not too soon—or too late): Clo needs to believe she’ll help to end […]

Alexis M. Smith interviewed by Jennifer Spiegel: Iceberg Theory Chic

Alexis M. Smith is the author of Glaciers (Tin House Books, 2012), her debut novel, which I read (and this seems important) in one day following a month-long dip, or submersion (near drowning), into Moby-Dick. Why mention my Melville antics? Say what you will about the whale epic, but that book is dense. Like swimming in Campbell’s Chunky Sirloin Burger […]
