SELECTED VIDEOS: 1971-1984 by David Starkey

July 1, 2011 Contributed By: David Starkey

   All About Me
I’m pretty sure this was my first video.  Or maybe my second.

*

   Sucker Punch
Here I am, giving myself a bloody nose.

*

   Maha Mantra
There were still lots of Hare Krishnas in the big airports back then.

*

   The Perseids
The bulb in my strobe light burned out, so I just kept flicking the light switch in the bathroom on and off as fast as I could.

*

   Unidentified Flying Outrage
That’s a pie pan, of course.

*

   Darth Vader
These are some of the knots my father taught me (he was in the Navy).

*

   Rubber Chicken
I got this at a flea market in Oakland.

*

   Self-Inflicted Wound
That’s a real tattoo she’s giving herself—not henna.

*

   Ransacking Kmart
We took off before they caught us.

*

   Unadulterated Ice Cream Truck
This one almost made it into a museum show, but I think I insulted the curator on my entry form.

*

   Forbidden Love
Some of them were like little plays.  This one was about an old lady who was a bit too fond of her grandson.

*

   5th & Seaton
I was basically homeless at the time.

*

   Arrest Warrant
This is one of the last ones I made before I got my job in Underwriting.

*

   Cellophane
For a few moments, I really thought I was going to suffocate.

Nighttime, Gay Bar on 14th & P

I order vodka and seltzer and check my coat. // I look up and meet a pair of eyes; he must know I’m lost. Dizzy.

Carnival by Marcel Lecomte (translated by K.A. Wisniewski)

Wrong Side of the Road (An Autumn Poem) by Andrew Galan

Silver escalator going up, red struck stick going down seized ebon ink trip stair, stainless dimples on fire, arch ossified glide and anatomy something done; pass Stygian sartorial Spock going down to the wrong side of the road. Caught on heartless rivet cheek, burnt by phosphorous trace grain over toecap thread — stand hard going […]
