My friend, who studies the warming world, tells me
that, at the bar, more than a few climate scientists
wagered against the human race not knowing
what to say, I say, Hard to collect those winnings.
Only later do I wonder who would trade all that life
for being proved right. To this, too, there is probably
an answer. Some of us are cynics, ecologists the same
as anyone else. But maybe theirs is the wise hazard:
to bet extravagantly against miracles in an inadmissible
hope that, after all, our losses will make room for awe.
